JLPT N4

JLPT N4 Kanji List: All 169 Kanji With Meanings

Por Kanji Guide ·

Short answer: JLPT N4 is the second-easiest level, and the list below has 169 kanji with meanings, readings and stroke counts. Each links to a picture story. If you know N5, many of these are combinations of kanji you already have, so they go faster than the number suggests.

As with every level, there is no official kanji list. The JLPT organisers stopped publishing one in 2010. This list is the N4 group in Kanji Guide, and commonly quoted estimates put the N4 total at about 300 kanji including N5. For how those numbers fit together, see how many kanji are in each JLPT level.

How N4 differs from N5

N5 is mostly simple shapes and words from the first weeks. N4 shifts to daily life: places, time, family, travel and actions. The shapes get busier too, with more strokes and more parts.

Three things help.

1. Lean on N5 parts. 明 (bright) is sun plus moon. 親 (parent) has a tree in it. 男 (man), from N5, contains 田 (rice field). Here is the story for 明:

Sun (日) and moon (月) shine together in the sky, and everything looks bright.

If 日 and 月 are solid, this one costs almost nothing.

2. Group by theme. The N4 list has natural clusters:

Learning a cluster together makes the differences easier to see. 兄 and 弟 are easier next to each other than apart.

3. Slow down for look-alikes. Pairs such as 売 and 買, or 貸 and 借, look alike and have opposite meanings. Give them their own session and read both stories side by side.

Stories and pictures

Every N4 kanji has a story. At the moment 77 of the 169 have a picture as well, and the others show the kanji in large type. If you are the sort of learner who needs the image, you can still make your own from the story text. Here is 田:

Look down on a rice field from above: four neat plots, split by the paths between them, just like the shape of the kanji.

Pairs that need care

Some N4 kanji come in opposites or near-twins. Learn each pair together.

  • Buy and lend: 買 (buy) is read かう in 買う. Its story:

When I have my eye on something, I shell out the shells (貝) to buy it.

  • Lend and borrow: 貸 (かす, to lend) and 借 (かりる, to borrow). The stories separate them by who is doing what:

A poor substitute (代) teacher asks the class to lend him money for the bus home.

Once upon a time (昔), a person (亻) came to borrow a book and never gave it back.

  • Elder and younger brother: 兄 (あに) and 弟 (おとうと), which also combine in 兄弟 (きょうだい, siblings).

Give each pair one study session, read the two stories one after the other, and look at the example words. Because the stories are different, you can tell them apart.

Words worth knowing from this list

Some N4 kanji are mostly met inside one or two common words. These examples come straight from the kanji pages:

Kanji Word Reading Meaning
駅 駅前 えきまえ in front of a station
店 店舗 てんぽ shop
飲 飲む のむ to drink
朝 朝食 ちょうしょく breakfast
春 春先 はるさき beginning of spring

Learning the word beside the kanji ties the reading to something you can use.

A pace for N4

At five new kanji a day, the 169 take about 34 days. At three a day, about 57. As with N5, add review time, and do not add new kanji while you have a large review pile. See how many kanji per day.

If you have just finished N5, take a week of review before you start. A solid base saves time later.

What next

After N4 comes N3, with 370 kanji in Kanji Guide. You can browse the N3 list any time. For N4 itself, you can use the N4 hub, or open the study app and filter to N4. It works in a phone browser and there is an iPhone app.

If you are starting from the beginning, go to the N5 kanji list first.
